There is no denying it, gun safes and home safes are heavy and can prove quite a challenge when it comes time to relocate from one home to the next. Believe it or not, there is a right and wrong way of moving any kind of safe. Their heavy nature is perfect for protecting against home burglary, fires, and other concerns, but makes it a challenge to move. Additionally, moving a safe improperly can cause damage to your old and new home, truck, or those helping move if not done the right way.

Here are a few steps to take if you want to move a safe….well, safely.

moving a safe

Empty the safe of all contents.

This may seem like a no brainer, but it is worth repeating – make sure all items are removed from the case – especially a gun safe. An accidental drop could cause damage to the contents inside, or even the safe itself, and that could become very costly. Removing all the items inside before you move a safe will also make it lighter.

Invest in the proper equipment.

You will need a good heavy duty furniture dolly, gloves, straps, truck, and other items to help you lift and move a safe. This is definitely not the place to cut costs. Invest in solid equipment to ensure that moving your safe is done as safely as possible and that nothing breaks in the move process.

Protect the floors and walls.

Protect your walls and floors by wrapping the safe in a thick blanket and securing it with tape. It is also important to make sure when moving your safe to clear the path from the house to the truck and from the truck to its new location. Make sure all rugs, bags, boxes, animals, and dogs are secured out of the way.

Hire professional movers.

The best way to take the stress out of having to move a safe is to hire professional movers to help with the heavy lifting. After the initial free in-home estimate, they will show up with all of the equipment needed to move your safe safely and transport it to your new home.
